PLANE SALES
I didn't set out to make planes for sale!

And I'm not going to 'manufacture' in the conventional sense. Like Wayne Anderson, and Philip Marcou, and a handful of others, I'm going to make small numbers, when I can, and as they're finished, offer them for sale.

They'll be one-offs - each different, although with theme and design consistency. I'll use elite materials (rosewood, nickel silver, stainless steel, brass and bronze, ebony, abalone ...) and make almost entirely by hand, with dovetails, brass screws, hand polishing ... fairing by eye and by judgement. And, sometimes, when appropriate, incorporating 'found' objects in the design.

The illustration below shows three mid-size, single-hand (traditionally known as 'unhandled') block plane/smoother designs. Five of the third version (bottom right) are under way, to be infilled with rosewood, Australian desert acacia, and New Zealand black pine (matai).

These will be York pitch (50 degrees), bevel down, relatively heavy, 150 mm (six inch) long, 'unadjustered' but with conventional rotating lever caps and 50mm wide (2 inch) by 6mm (quarter inch) Terry (HNT) Gordon blades.

They will fill a gap between the commercially-available block planes and jack planes, built to the standards of the best bespoke infills.

They will be tall, making eye-hand judgement of level and plumb easier when used as smoothers and when chamfering and trimming.
