Made when I was about 8, at Studholme in South Canterbury.
Looks like totara, probably from a fence post. I don't have any recollection of tools, but must have had a saw and some chisels.
Why I chose a Maori motif for the lid, who knows! Perhaps we had that image in the house. I do recall a tiki-like wooden object that I think was a honeymoon purchase when my parents visited Rotorua.
What does it say about the world view of an 8 year old pakeha boy in one of the whiter parts of 1950s New Zealand ... that he chose this image to decorate something he made? I don't know what it means, and I was there!
