Candidate Profile Statement
Candidate for Mayor, Central Otago District
Malcolm Macpherson
As Central settles into a period of slower growth, it's time for us all to take stock.
There are new challenges - for the council and for the district. Moving into debt, holding our costs, and confronting big energy projects (Clutha Hydro, wind, coal and gold mining), to mention just three, tell us that it won't be business as usual.
It's a great privilege to work for what's best in a special part of New Zealand. Looking back I can tick off personal involvement in: Central Prospects - the origins of our economic development, tourism, community planning and destination management activities. Healthy Homes - delivering subsidised insulation and heating. Seasonal Solutions - which began as my Central Employment Trust. Safe Lifestyles - raising awareness of the risks facing our young people. Apple Futures - a rescue package now underpinning our apple industry. Irrigation projects and energy costs are next.
